"Everything great about the band has surfaced during this whole process... Everything."
— Michael McMorrow
Stolen Ogre – born in a jam and raised in the legendary Pacific Northwest music scene – is conquering new territory with the 2004 release of its first full length CD...
"Road to Jericho" combines musically woven arrangements and soul-crafted lyrics with the freedom and attitude of a great jam session. In its ten tight songs, ROAD TO JERICHO covers a span of mood and style that embraces the many influences of Stolen Ogre. Stolen Ogre has weaved and blended all its variable influences into something completely its own.
"It is really hard trying to put these people in a specific genre because they take so much from so many different areas. Bottom line I would say it's rock, folk, jam, and pop, all mixed together into one big happy concoction."
– Bill Schiltz Enigmaonline.com
One of Stolen Ogre's original founding members; Blues Traveler drummer Brendan Hill returned to record with Stolen Ogre on the new record. Road to Jericho also marks the debut of new member Bassist Marc Willett Stolen Ogre has rounded out the rhythm unit while broadening their world jam appeal.
On stage, Stolen Ogre hits its hottest stride, stretching and exploring with extended solos and inspired jams. They skillfully bring the songs back around and drive the point home with force and style.
"The thrill of live performance is possibly the closest thing to love. It’s never work; if it feels that way you’re doing something wrong."
– Brendan Hill
So many great groups catch their creative fire from a chance encounter. Stolen Ogre’s flash point was during the 1996 H.O.R.D.E. Festival, where after a dust storm jam in Utah led by the great bluesman Taj Mahal, keyboardist and songwriter Michael McMorrow, met and jammed with Brendan Hill, drummer and founding member of Blues Traveler. Sparks flew, phone numbers were exchanged, and Stolen Ogre was born.
The band progressed from great idea to performing unit in Seattle’s fertile club circuit, where musicians meet and jam, bands form and fade in a constantly shifting scene that pushes talent to the top. Guitarist David Simpson joined McMorrow and Hill to jam, record and perform, and soon bassist Steve Manning, and sax player the Reverend Scott "Junior" Adams did the same. The addition of lead singer and songwriter Pamela Tobiason, a stand-out in the Seattle music scene, firmly bonded the company of these talented players.
Stolen Ogre was invited to play some shows as a part of the H.O.R.D.E. – a satisfying full-circle experience that encouraged the band to write and rehearse a two-hour show. Stolen Ogre capped its first year with a successful anniversary show at Seattle’s legendary Crocodile Café, and went on to play Northwest dates with Gov’t Mule. The band then recorded it’s first EP.
"...the EP from Stolen Ogre sounded like the best music I've ever heard... Their CD Grind, immediately demonstrates that Pamela Tobiason has a gusty edge to her lead vocal work and that David Simpson lends some well-crafted guitar work to this country-tinged rock."
—Dave Gingold of the Eugene Weekly 7-26-01
The band takes its name from a child’s doll that Brendan Hill spotted on the roadside of the German Autobahn. Christened Ogre, and enthroned on Hill’s drum kit, it became his good luck mascot through Blues Traveler’s early years. After Ogre vanished on tour, McMorrow, Hill and company adopted the name – and the circumstances – in playful tribute.
As his Blues Traveler ‘day gig’ keeps him on the move, founding member Brendan Hill remains active with Stolen Ogre as a creative collaborator.
"This time around we really captured something here."
– David Simpson
With three solid years of creativity and growth under their collective belt, , the band is studio-seasoned, club-tested and road-ready to take the music to new heights.
