Formed by brothers Chris and Jonathan Straube in March 2001, the pair set out to bring their interpretation of modern Britpop crossed with classic American Garage rock. The Northern Souls are Traditional British Pop crossed with classic American Independent Rock, played with a live presence that is undeniable. The raw power of the band coupled with simple pop hooks provides for a very special live experience. Many have called the band a cross between the Ramones and the best of modern British pop, but the attitude is completely American Garage Rock. As a whole, the band’s songs are distinctly their own, yet all belong to one band. Chris Straube’s vocal style reminds the listener of Oasis, The Verve, and The Buzzcocks, with the delivery of The Replacements’ classic anthems. The guitars are powerful, yet layered enough to know there is more going on here than the stereotypical “alternative” sound. Guitarists Jonathan Straube and Travis Nelson’s on stage chemistry is undeniable, each taking their proper turn to grab the attention of the discerning listener. Built on the straight-ahead punk rhythms of Brian McCrossen and the pop sensibility of Gar Hooker, the band never fails to entertain. The Northern Souls continue to work on new material and are aiming for large-scale touring by the end of the year. |
