CAROLYN WONDERLAND, THURSDAY OCTOBER 24th AT RESERVATION BLUES

Carolyn Wonderland, a native of Houston Texas and now based in Austin, is about to rock the house at Reservation Blues on October 24th, and whether there's a crowd of 3 or 503, you can bet your last shot of whiskey that the place is going to be on fire. In addition to being an accomplished guitarist, the woman lets loose vocals, at once tender and ravaging, that have inspired comparisons to Bonnie Raitt and Janis Joplin. She also has a gift for songwriting that is, arguably, unmatched by anyone in her own generation - her genre-melding originals sound like classics from way back. Wonderland's stage presence is a refreshing combination of heart-melting, ballsy and hilarious, and she surrounds herself with some of Austin's finest musicians. The band features lead guitarist Scott Daniels whose unassuming presence onstage belies a show stopping talent, and a funky, jazzy, diverse and highly improvisational rhythm section embodied by drummer Eldridge Goins and bassist Bobby Perkins. The sets span enough genres - jazz, blues, country, rock and roll, surf, zydeco, Latin, you name it -- to keep any aficionado happy, and the energetic intensity of the music has been known to urge even the most sworn wallflower onto the dance floor in a burst of un-self-consciousness that renders them impossible to recognize.

Wonderland has won just about every music award that the city of Houston has to offer, including Best Female Vocalist, Songwriter of the Year and Best Blues Artist. She's opened for Rod Stewart and Ray Charles, and has had the honor of playing at the birthday parties of legends B.B. King and Willie Nelson. She has recorded with Vince Welnick and Jerry Lightfoot, among others.

Wonderland credits the band's combined skill to the fact that they tour constantly, as she says, "The more you play the less you suck, and we play a lot." But they rarely make it to the Midwest. So if you're up for a mind blowing, uplifting evening of music, head down to Reservation Blues on Thursday night to welcome some of Austin's finest to the Windy City.
