Dueling Divas at The Tractor Tavern - Seattle WA
by Pat Ferris
Last Thursday I braved the rain and storm to make it to see three up and
coming female artists at The
Tractor Tavern, one of Seattle's most popular and well known live
music venues.
Arriving
as the opening band (billy
moon) started, I was able to hear a great lyrical song-writer with
an exceptional band backing her. billy moon (this isn't a typo...they
don't capitalize the band name) is led by Kristy Karen Smith, one of the
nominees for Best New Artist in The Seattle Area Music Awards, also known
as the SAMIEs (Seattle Area Musical Innovation and Excellence).
Kristy's husband and drummer, Steve Smith, (also owner of Seattle
Drum School), was also nominated for best producer for billy moon's
debut release "The Storm Before the Calm".
Already known around
the Seattle area, Kristy Smith, and billy moon have opened for some major
artists such as: Joan Baez, Little Feat, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, John
Hiatt, Phil Lesh, Roseanne Cash, Bruce Hornsby, KD Lang, Chicago, Bonnie
Raitt, Sting, Shawn Colvin, Bernie Taupin, The Paperboys, and The Crash
Test Dummies. Her performance was a bit tough being the first band of
a triple bill, but quickly won the heart of the audience
After
a short break, Tiger Zane, one of the hardest working gals I've met in
the Seattle music scene, and one of the main people behind organizing
the evening's entertainment, took center stage with her band. Tiger was
also nominated for Best Contemporary Performing Songwriter Album,
as well as Best New Artist. Tiger's band warmed the crowd up as The Tractor's
audience grew. Heartfelt lyrics and creative hooks were the driving force
behind Tiger's music, and her backing band was tight...nice fretless bass
work too.
Finally,
Susan Robkin and her band wrapped the night up with an explosive performance.
Winner of several SAMIE awards including: Best Rock/Pop Album (How to
Say Goodbye); Album of the Year,(How to Say Goodbye); Female Vocalist
of the Year; and Producer of the Year (Brent DeRocher/(Susan Robkin/How
to Say Goodbye)
Susan's performance was really inspiring! A total natural onstage, Susan
is a great front-person with incredible stage presence and power when
she sings...definitely one of those bands you need to see live to completely
appreciate what they're about. Her award-winning 2nd
CD, entitled "How to Say Goodbye" looks like it could pave the
way for this energetic young performer to break on to a national scene.
Aside from being one of the nicest and humblist people I've met in the
Seattle music circuit, Susan has a natural radiant energy that makes you
feel good just being around her. It's no wonder she's been able to attract
such a good following.
All three bands put on good performances and drew a near-capacity crowd
on a rainy Thursday night, and I think we'll hear a lot more from these
three gals spearheading the Seattle Rocker-Chick movement.
