Pick of the Week
Wishbone - Salt Lake City, UTWishbone at Brewski's
Salt Lake City
by Josh Cooper

Slightly belated, this review was submitted by one of our readers in Ogden, Utah regarding one of the local bands going by the name of Wishbone. We welcome and appreciate reviews from volunteer field correspondents. Thank you Josh!

On Dec. 31st, 2000 Wishbone brought the house down at Brewski's, located at 244 25th street in Ogden, UT. In speaking with the owner and managers of Brewski's, they were not expecting a great turn out. As you know, New Year's Eve was on a Sunday and in Utah, even New Year's Eve isn't enough to get most people out of their homes.

But such was not the case this year. At seven that night the crowd started pouring in, two hours before the performance was to begin, and waited with eager anticipation for the music to begin.

Wishbone started out the night with a few familiar covers but with the uexpected twists that the audience have come to expect from these performers. The rythmn section of Mike Morris and Jason Horspool provided the perfect foundation for the amazing guitar work of George Hurd and the unbelievable vocal talents of singer Kevin Smith.

The few people in the crowd who had never heard Wishbone before were amazed at how Kevin Smith can emulate any performer. He sang everything from Journey and the Police, to Creed and Van Halen with amazing emotion and accuracy. If you were to close your eyes, you would think that the original artist was singing on stage.

The excitement continued to build throughout the night as the midnight hour approached. Wishbone brought everyone out onto the dance floor with covers of James Brown's "Sex Machine" and Van Halen's "Best of Both Worlds". The cornerstone of the night occured when they broke into a version of The Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary". Half way through the song, Mike Morris and Horspool opened up the flood gates and took the song to a new level. The result was an exhilirating ten minutes of "Free Association through music". The band raced through improvised time changes and the incorporation of classic zeppelin songs before finally settling back into the groove of The Cult's original composition.

Wishbone has proved, time and time again, that it takes more than instruments and a club to be a great band. Their dedication to their craft and enthusiasm for the music is communicated to the audience each time they climb the stage. You have not heard the Utah music scene until you've heard wishbone.
