Houston TX is a home to some of the best blues musicians in the world. During my two-year stay in Houston, I had the opportunity to meet with and play with a lot of these great players.

Two of these artists, Guy Schwartz and Roger Tausz make up the foundation of a band that goes by the name of The New Jack Hippies. The NJH have had some of the best artists in E.Texas as members of the band at one time or another, and are currently putting together a West Coast tour to promote the release of their latest release CD "Blue Jack Hippies" now available through their official website and at MP3.com

Depending upon where you see them, the Hippies may have as many as 8 members on stage at the same time, but the touring version of the band is made up of Guy Schwartz on Bass, Roger Tausz on guitar, Chaz Nadege on keys, John Chupin on drums/percussion and Heath Spencer Phillip on vocals.

Their music ranges from traditional Texas blues to Tom Petty / John Cougar type Americana rock. I've had the opportunity to see this band play live in Houston. Every member of the band is a seasoned professional with plenty of touring under their belt from different projects. This shows in the tightness and dynamics of their playing.

Truly a professional level band, The Hippies are as enjoyable to hear on their CD as they are live, although the lives shows have so much spontaneity...with guest artists of the highest caliber sitting when you least expect it. One of my favorite guest players is tenor saxophonist Jerald Gray, who has played with the likes of B.B. King, Ike & Tina, and Aretha Franklin. Aside from his standard tenor sax, Jerald will often use a bamboo saxophone to add a new dimension to the sound.

It's always a pleasure hearing their music and seeing them live. The New Jack Hippies are down for being one of the most danceable original blues bands in the Houston area.
