Never Go - CD Review
by Pat Ferris

amusia
Pronunciation: ( A-myOO'zE-u) -n. Med. the inability to produce or comprehend music or musical sounds.

The opening line of their biography begs the reader to take a listen, if for no other reason than to understand the sound of incomprehensible music.

The long awaited follow up to their 1999 debut release Forever Ends is entitled Never Go, and is currently released as a four-song EP, featuring singer/songwriter Ruth Peterson; a Nashville native turned Bostonian with a flair for deep lyrics. With a vocal style similar to Sarah McLachlan, Peterson's hypnotizing voice and poetic lyrics are backed by guitarists Todd Russell and David Sella, bassist Michael Calienes and drummer Matt Russell. Their arrangements are suited to Peterson's poetry, making Never Go an original, unpredictable and exciting acoustic driven rock and roll classic.

My favorite song (unfortunately not at their MP3.com webpage) was Home. The poetry is ironic and introspective; "the more I write, the more I read, the more I know I never really knew..." Ruth really scored big points on my 'favorite bands' list with this one! Home has all the ingredients for a top-40 hit.

Self-described as Pop/Soft Rock, amusia has an underlying tension that leaves me feeling that they could easily cross over and capture the alternative rock as well as the pop market, giving amusia mainstream appeal.

With a new CD scheduled for release in late 2002, Peterson and Russell have been exploring acoustic duo performances and will be performing their acoustic set at THE KENDALL CAFE in Cambridge Massachusetts (Boston area) on Monday May 20, 2002 at 8pm. (The Kendall is one of our advertisers, and a VERY cool club w/cool management!). If you are in the New England area, make the trek to hear incomprehensible music played live!
