Suzanne Sterling & Bhakti - San Francisco, CARagas for the Soul by Pat Ferris Suzanne Sterling & Bhakti are a San Francisco based band bringing the fundamentals of Middle Eastern and Indian rhythms, modals and lyrical expression together with Western influences to create spiritual pagan groove music indiginous to the Bay area. I needed to step out of my standard conforming mold for music to appreciate what Bhakti is creating. Rather than using poetry, metaphores or introverted lyrics, Suzannes style tends to lean more to incorporating Indian raga modes with taranas/chants that focus instead on spiritual devotion and enlightenment. The seven member band has toured all over california playing festivals, raves, temples, yoga studios and all manner of alternative and sacred venues (one of the highlights being the World Festival of Sacred Music hosted by the Dalai Lama in 1999). Although their music is far from mainstream, Suzanne Sterling and Bhakti's use of voice, ethnic percussion, oud, saz, violin, and tambor offer their target audience, a band that is original, haunting, and medatative.
