K.J. Denhert - New York CityGirl Like Me - CD Review By Patrick Ferris Easy listening is the first thought that comes to mind when listening to New York urban folk and jazz artist K.J. Denhert. Her third solo release, Girl Like Me, is a well-produced CD combining elements of jazz, Latin, groove, and soul. The intricacy of each instrument is perfectly placed to deliver a well-rounded and full sound that enhances K.J.'s silky voice. Using a revolving door of world-class musicians, Denhert has surrounded herself with players that lay a rock-solid foundation from which she creates her sound. The album focus of 'Girl Like Me' is K.J.'s introspective songwriting ability that weaves her storytelling into smooth, yet often chunky and funky jazz arrangements. In addition to nine originals, Girl Like Mecovers two classic rock songs, The Beatles She Loves you, Message in a Bottle by The Police, as well as the traditional Oh Susannah, all performed in K.J.'s signature sound.
