If there was a single person on this planet that shared a similar musical upbringing to myself, that would be Phil Moore. Childhood chums since 2nd grade, Phil and I went through the school music program, played together in our own middle-school swing ensemble and had the same music teacher for seven years. A master of woodwinds and currently a session player and music teacher in the Los Angeles area, Phil's first solo effort, Silly Blues is a gem of self-expression and creativity. Because I know Phil on a personal level, I hear things in his CD that audibly defines the very essence of his personality. The title track "Silly Blues" features Phil on a multitude of saxophones grasping random notes out thin air to make mosaic of sound that makes modal sense out of complete insanity, while track three, Angry at the Sun, is an intricate jazz piece using the subtlety of Indian tablas as a backbeat to Phil's intro which crunches into a syncopated and funky jazz arrangement. Beginning to end, Silly Blues was as easy to listen to as reading a good book. A variety of arrangements will keep the listener entertained and every song had a story to tell.
